Our time in...
CHERBOURG

Our visit began by visiting the Ration Shed Museum. It was eye opening and powerful to see and share the rich cultural history of the Cherbourg Indigenous People.
The Ration Shed Museum highlighted the beauty and skill of traditional and modern Aboriginal Art. We were in awe of the meaningful creations and walked away with our hearts warmed and our minds opened.

The History...

...the Culture.

Our Big Lifters helped out with Day 1 of the Cherbourg Community Clean Up project. In the morning, we split into groups and assisted with gardening, tree planting and rubbish removal activities. It was amazing how much of a difference 40 people can make in such a short amount of time! Many council and community members of Cherbourg helped out for the day, and you could truly feel the community spirit shining through.

Over 200 native Bunya trees were planted that day! A small step into rebuilding the natural landscape after some devastating and destructive weather the past year. Our teams picked up many ute's full of rubbish from the local parks and found many interesting items along the way! The morning's efforts were celebrated over a hearty BBQ, shared between our Big Lifters and the Cherbourg community.
As this was our first together, we were all super excited to get to know each other. Staying at the old school principal's house lead to shower lists and our cooking crew whipping up a storm for dinner! It was an amazing and memorable experience had by all. Thank you Cherbourg!

"Upon seeing the town I felt so excited, it looked so beautiful in the most unique way. Playing a game of soccer in the early evening, as the sun began to set and the air began to cool, surrounded by all these beautiful children, will stay in my memory forever."
- Monica Das Gupta, QUT Big Lifter 2011
