2012 marked the second year of QUT Big Lift and it's second annual November Trip. Leaving Brisbane early we headed again to Cherbourg for a lesson in local Indigenous culture and history at the Ration Shed Museum.
For the new trip participants the experience was overwhelming and eye opening. While the returning participants were nostalgic with the return to the town. It was clear that a lot of work had occurred within the town, and specifically the Ration Shed which allowed each participant a new insight into the culture and history of the town and its people. The pride displayed by the town in the facility was also displayed through all of the work they had achieved to continue its development and enrichment.
On day two, after spending the night at the Murgon PCYC we began our first set of service projects for the trip. Half of the group spent their time gardening and maintaining the grounds of the Ration Shed Museum while the rest ventured to Cherbourg State School.
At the state school we were greeted by the principal and welcomed by the students and staff. We ran a rotation of different activities with the kids and were shown the magnificent catering facilities and nutrition program implemented in the school. Again it was clear that there is a strong culture and sense of community in the town across all generations.
