The Community Spirit...
Between visiting the R.M Williams learning centre, talking to the community members and our bus' air con breaking down.... we really got a strong connection to our Aussie backyard! Thankfully the air con was restored by our amazing bus driver Duncan!
The small community of Eidsvold welcomed us in with open arms and warm smiles - all of us felt we had found a second home! Between BBQ lunches, fresh fruit, cold water, swimming pool fun, an evening meal at the Eidsvold Bowls Club, sharing of stories and many laughs - we truly felt the strong community spirit shining through. Thank you to the people of Eidsvold for such a wonderful experience!
The Outback...
"One of the Elders was keen to tell us their stories that we could take back to QUT with us. We felt so privileged that they were so enthusiastic to share stories with us and give us some local history on the other communities we were visiting."
- Emma Wratten, QUT Big Lifter 2011
The Projects...
There were many helping hands across many different projects! Splitting our Big Lifters into smaller groups was the perfect way to maximise our impact during our short stay of two days.
Our projects included a garden overhaul at the old RSL / new Youth Centre, a small landscape design and foundations job, the indoor and outdoor renovation of the Wakka Wakka Women's centre, the repainting of the saddlery at the Eidsvold showgrounds, the clean and tidy up of the Eidsvold Historical Society Centre and the running of Opti-Mind challenges with the kids of Eidsvold State School.
Every project achieved tangible outcomes for the community as well as high levels of satisfaction and pride for our participants!
