Our inaugural Mid-Year Road Trip was a seven day journey in an entirely different direction to the Surat Basin and Western Downs regions of Queensland. During Semester 1, we organised many volunteer service projects and opportunities community engagement in conjunction with contacts in the towns we visited. From our departure on 26 June to arrival on 2 July, we covered almost 1500 kilometres on our Big Lift bus trip. A focus for this trip was to investigate the effects of coal-seam gas mining in communities in an unbiased way. The towns we visited were Dalby, Yuleba, Injune and Chinchilla. We also had the indescribable opportunity of camping in the beautiful Carnarvon Gorge and spending a day hiking up to the Aboriginal Art Gallery through the magnificent Australian rainforest. We are incredibly thankful for the opportunites we had - to the communities who welcomed us and shared their stories; to the Executive Team that put together this trip; to the organisations that support us such as LDI and QUT Student Engagement and most importantly, to the thirty Big Lifters that underwent this journey!
