Brisbane - Dalby - Jandowae - Chinchilla
Scroll Down
This year, Big Lift ran it's second Mid-Year trip and it been an incredible experience. Our team of 25 volunteers set off on the 4th till the 8th of July to Dalby, Jandowae (for the first time!) and Chinchilla. Check out Dalby, Jandowae and Chincilla to see our gallery from each community!
During our time within these communities we've learned about environmental sustainability within a regional setting, various perspectives and issues about Coal Seam Gas and both some of the complexities and joys of living within a regional community. We had the opportunity to get our hands dirty from making lanterns to setting up a new garden space. Our time in Jandowae was an very rewarding and fun experience, as we ran a Youth Chill Out Day with children, youth and families within the community. An evening with sharing dinner and speeches with community members from Cameby was inspiring, challenging and interesting.
We are honoured and thankful to all of the community members who have made us feel welcome in their towns and for sharing their stories, lives and experiences with us. Also thank you to our wonderful participants, family and friends in Brisbane and at QUT who have made this trip possible, and supported us.
First Stop - Volunteering in Dalby!
A focus in Dalby was learning about environmental sustainability and doing hands on volunteering projects with different community organizations. We also had the opportunity to assist with lantern making for the Dalby Delicious and Delightful Festival held in August 2016, which was tonnes of fun!
Second Stop - Jandowae Youth Chill Out Day and Kindergarten!
Our first time in Jandowae was a memorable and fun experience, volunteering at the Jandowae Kindergarten and running a chill out day for youngsters and families of the community. Our 25 volunteers got to do gardening, build a tipi, play drama games, music, arts and crafts and sports with the kids and chat to families. It was a fantastic day.
A huge thank you to Jandowae Anglican Church for the beautiful venue, to the community who made it a wonderful day and to our fantastic volunteers.
Our Time in Chinchilla
The time spent in Chinchilla was chilly, uplifting, rewarding, educational and enjoyable! We spent time out in the community doing various projects which enabled us to lend a helping hand and have some fascinating conversations within the community. One highlight was a community dinner held at Cameby Hall where we listened to various perspectives on critical issues within affecting the region such as; sustainability, Coal Seam Gas and education.
We are incredibly thankful for the community in Chinchilla for the wonderful opportunities to volunteer and have meaningful conversations with community members, and of course our Big Lift volunteers who were compassionate, energetic and engaged within the community!
