The 2016 QUT Big Lift Team created the first ever 'Mini-Lift' experience for seventeen Big Lifters over the weekend of 14 & 15 May. The Ration Shed Museum in Cherbourg is an amazing symbol of resilience, community spirit and Indigenous culture & history. Big Lift visits & volunteers in the town of Cherbourg each November during their end-of-year trip. This year, we took volunteers out for a weekend in Cherbourg to participate in their third annual Reconciliation Fun Run. We camped overnight in town where we had the opportunity to meet other Fun Run volunteers at an induction afternoon at the Ration Shed, spent the evening playing touch football with kids as organised by the local council and PCYC and participated in the Fun Run early morning on Sunday! Some of our team members ran the 7km run from Murgon to Cherbourg whilst others helped volunteer at the start & finish lines. It was a brilliant experience to meet some incredible people and see the town come to life; and we're certainly looking forward to returning in future years.

For our second Mini-Lift of 2016, a team of volunteers headed to Dalby to assist with the Dalby's Delicious and Delightful Festival, which celebrates the multi-cultural community through hosting workshops, food stalls, performances and most famously - the lantern parade! We had an absolute blast and felt so happy to assist with this incredible community event.

Thank you to the wonderful people of Dalby for having us in your community, to the hard-working, kind-hearted and sometimes (always) silly Big Lifters that came along  and volunteered.

Cherbourg Yhurri Gurri Festival - 1st October 2016

For our third mini-lift of the year our team of 9 Big Lifters headed out to Cherbourg to volunteer at the first ever Yhurri Gurri Festival on October 1st, 2016. Over the weekend the town of Cherboug came alive with music, dancing and celebration to celebrate arts and culture! We're so happy we could be there supporting the event & the community. We had an awesome day setting up for the festival, volunteering to help manage stalls and activities and we even joined in some of the festivities.

USmob FM Cherbourg 94.1 station manager Aunty Jeanette reflected, 'Even though Cherbourg is a place of many tribes, we've still learnt the Wakka Wakka dance and language.'
